Are you still listening to movies and television shows using your TV’s built-in speakers? Stop. Seriously: A soundbar will elevate your viewing experience to near-cinematic levels without having to leave the comfort of your home. Soundbars come in a range of profiles and prices: the more expensive setups can span several pieces to create a surround sound system while single bars will fit easily under a TV, whether on a TV stand or wall-mounted.

Brand is important, as some soundbars are more compatible with TVs of the same brand, but there are a few more considerations to make when choosing a soundbar.

If you’re aiming for a surround-sound setup or a more immersive audio experience, the more channels the better. The first number in a model name, followed by “ch,” refers to the soundbar’s number of channels. (Most modern-day shows and movies offer five audio channels.)

Make sure you pay attention to dimensions, especially if you have limited space. Not being able to use your new gadget because the TV sits too low or it’s too long for your TV stand isn’t fun. And, finally, plan out your placement. Some soundbars include wireless subwoofers (and more) that will need to be placed in proximity to the soundbar.

I purchased this for my living room TV and love it. My place is now the go-to movie-night destination, thanks to the booming bass behind the subwoofer that makes the floor rumble during action scenes, just like at the theater. Setup is as easy as plugging in the HDMI cable or optical cable, and the low-profile design makes it easy to fit into your existing setup.
